From 6th January 2013, All Calder Clarion Sunday Club Runs and the Saturday Improver (formerly Fixie) rides will start from Thornes Park Denby Dale Road Car Park. This replaces the former method of meeting at various points around Wakefield depending on the destination of the ride.

Some of the former start points will now be used as Pick Up Points which the runs will pass through in order to collect anyone who prefers to start from pick up points nearer there home.

On 2nd December, when the temperatures were around freezing all day, the ‘Heroes’ planned to cross the Pennines to New Mill to meet up with Saddleworth Clarion who would lead them to the acclaimed Polocini Coffee Shop and Cake Emporium at Romilly, just east of Stockport.

However, due to ice, the Heroes were forced to go down Woodhead Pass and meet up with Sadlleworth at Torside.

The cafe and bike shop has plenty of room to park your bike and a shelf for helmets and gloves instead of having to perch them under a seat. There’s a big wall map to plan the route home. After consuming renowned cakes and coffee there was the daunting prospect of climbing over the early winter bleakness of Holme Moss. The lads felt Polocini was really good but small – the owners have plans to get an outdoor heated area in future with big screen showing cyling events. They felt it’d be worthy of becoming a permanent “Heroes” run destination with a Strines route in summer and more direct route in Winter.

The plan was to do Strines on the way back, but it was decided that was too risky. Once the sun had been up for a while, Holme Moss was fine, and once back on the Yorkshire side to help strugglers, they came down the valley through Huddersfield instead of Denby Dale.

The taditional Club Run and ‘Masters’ Ride started from Heath Common and both had a good turnout for the ride to Squires at Newthorpe. Both runs went up Black Road, with the Club Run turning up Hell Lane and the Masters continuing up Pineapple Hill.  The “Masters” arrived at the Motor Cycle Cafe earlier than the Club Run, having taken a shorter route. Both groups ended the ride at the Kings Arms, Heath Common.
