Calder Clarion’s Tony Anderson, from Hemsworth was first rider off in the Wakefield Club’s first event 10 mile time trial of their Summer Evening Series on Wednesday 2nd May. Tony was on familiar roads on a new course which started on Station Road Hemsworth and onto Hemsworth bypass to join the new A1 link road to Upton where riders turned onto the A638 Wakefield Doncaster Road to Ackworth and then back to Hemsworth.
Ravensthorpe CC’s Andrew Callaghan’s won the opening Time Trial for the second year in succession with 24 minutes 43 seconds on a windy night, making conditions tough on exposed parts of the course. Michael Vennard (Calder) from Ossett was 32 seconds back, but this was a big improvement from last year when the gap was 1 minute 45 seconds.
There was a battle for team honours with Ravensthorpe’s Robert Hatfield took 3rd with 25.40, just edging Wrenthorpe’s Tom Butler (Calder Clarion) by 2 seconds. Tom’s team mate Rob Hudson from Haigh came 5th which meant that Calder were first team to finish three riders, but Ravensthorpe’s John Callaghan took 6th to clinch the team win by 1 point from Calder.
The next 4 placings down to 10th place were filled by Calder riders before Wakefield Triathlon’s Derek Johnson took 11th in 27.54 leading his team to 3rd place.
There was a notable ride from George Masson Calder Clarion’s club president who finished 21st; George is just short of his 80th birthday.
