Cycling events for children and adult beginners
One of West Yorkshire’s oldest cycling clubs Calder Clarion is running two events for children and adults wanting to give racing a try.
The Calder Clarion Track and Turf Go-Ride Racing events take place on a tarmac track in Bradford and Cyclocross course at the scout camp in West Bretton and are open to both members and non-members.
This is the third year that the increasingly successful Wakefield-based Go-Ride club, which now has four coaches and over 30 children regularly attending sessions, will be promoting its own racing events.
With the creation of a 1200 metre regional standard cycling track at the club’s Go-Ride venue St Thomas a Becket Catholic College in Sandal nearing completion, the club hopes to increase its coaching capacity and generate even more interest within the local community.
Calder Clarion Go-Ride lead coach Martin Price said: “We are very excited to promote this year’s track and turf series which is open to all newcomers as well as those children with some cycling experience.
“The cyclocross event in July is also a family social event, with a barbecue and other refreshments on offer. Last year many families stayed to watch and cheer on the children and adults in their races. It fosters a great sense of team fellowship and is also great fun to take part in.
“Everyone is welcome – even if you just want to watch or find out more about Calder Clarion and the Go-Ride children’s club. The two events are run as a series but cyclists can just attend one event if they prefer.
“We ask that all participants bring their own bike in good condition and also wear a helmet. We look forward to seeing some new faces as well as those who are already well-established within the club.”
The event details are:
- Saturday 18 June from 2 – 4pm: track event at Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford. Participants will complete a single lap time trial, followed by a multi-lap race within different age categories including U8s. These two results will count towards the overall series winner of the Track and Turf 2016 series. There will be an Italian pursuit team event to finish. Registration takes place from 1.30pm.
- Sunday 17 July from noon – cyclocross event on turf at Scout Camp, West Bretton. Participants will complete a single lap time trial, followed by a multi-lap race within different age categories. These two results will count towards the overall series winner of the Track and Turf 2016 series. This is followed by a mixed relay event. Registration takes place from noon with first race at 12.30pm
Prior to the track event in June, there will also be a one-off training session at Richard Dunn Sports Centre on Saturday 4 June from 2 – 4pm.
Calder Clarion’s Go-Ride club is run entirely by volunteers who have been trained by British Cycling. Calder Clarion is working towards Clubmark status which is a quality standard proving a club is observing best practice in child protection, coaching and competition, equity and club management.
It meets every Thursday from 6 – 7.30pm at St Thomas a Becket Catholic College in Sandal during term time.
The club is always looking for new members, volunteers and anyone interested in becoming a coach.
