George was a key part of our club for many years, being a member since 1965 and served as club president. In the words of the big man himself:
I joined the local cycling club Fullarton Wheelers in Irvine Ayrshire in 1947 aged. We met in an air raid shelter behind a hosiery factory. I rode time trials. My first 10ml time was a 29-41 as I recall. I went on to win most of the cups in the club over the years except the BAR trophy my personal bests in Scotland 10ml 24-43, 25ml 1-4-32, 30ml 1-20-05, 50ml 2-11-36, 100ml 4-34-11 and 12hr 236mls 572yds. I have ridden eight 12 hrs altogether.
I have since in England done 30ml in 1-19-23, and 10ml in 24-34 when I was over 60 yrs. These are my personal bests and still are. In the 1950s I rode a lot of cyclo cross. in the Scottish cyclo cross championship we (Fullarton) won the team award three times with my club mate Andy Kerr winning the Scottish title three times. I have ridden the Tour of the Trossachs time trial three times. I’ve ridden most of the classic road races in Scotland like the Glasgow to Dunoon over the Rest and be Thankful and the Washing Board climbs. The longest race was 150 mls from Arbroath to Ayr a Scottish Milk Race one day event. I rode for Ayrshire & Dumfriesshire Team in the Glasgow to Dundee three stage two day event and finished 21 overall. I Rode the Edinburgh Classic and the Rothesay Australian Pursuit with over 100 riders in six groups I was in the second last group and finished 6th I rode the isle of Millport Circuit, the isle Arran Circuit I rode another single day Milk race round Ayrshire
My best result was in the Fullarton 70ml event at Irvine when I finished second against the cream of Scotland riders amongst them were the Scottish team Andy Kerr my team mate just pipped me on the day, I have ridden many Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire championship events finished 3rd in three of them and have had 4th and 5th places in others.
We used to race at the Cumnock rally I also played bicycle polo at the rally have raced on the grass and shale tracks around Ayrshire I have also road raced over the Nick of Balloch climb which is used for the Easter Girvan Road race.
I joined the Calder in 1965, ridden hundreds of time trials and road races including on the Isle of Man in the Mannin Veg road race, the 25ml time trial 10ml TT and the Willaston Handicap Road Race.
I have ridden cyclo cross since 1965 up till I retired in 1997. I have ridden the three peaks 25times my best time was 3-26-24 my best finishing position was 13th don’t know the year,
I have four Vets national Cyclo Cross team championship medals and two Yorkshire Cyclo cross medals .
I’ve also ridden the Nottingham to Skegness classic five times the Leeds to Scarborough six times I’ve Ridden Tandem in races with Allan Rae including the Leeds Scarborough if you wanted any more information I would have to look up all my books for times I think I have given you a bit of what I have cycled over the years hope you can use some of it .
