Go-Ride Launched June 2012

A group of happy young cyclist can’t wait for next week’s Go-Ride session after a great launch session when coaches Tom Butler and Rob Hudson worked their magic at Thomas a Becket College Sandal.

There were lots of smiling faces and laughter evident, but the boys and girls were put through their paces and picked up lots of riding and safety techniques.  The session ended with a team relay race which incorporated the use of some of their newly acquired skills with some impressive surges of speed in evidence.

The session was superbly hosted at Thomas a Beckett College’s excellent facilities and lots of coaching equipment donated by British Cycling and Sky. Mark Burgess of Wakefield Cycles has also provided great support with a donation of cycle helmets for those who come without them.

There was a lot of organising late afternoon to get two spare bikes to Sandal for youngsters who were coming without bikes courtesy of Rob and Steve Ward, but everything came together. The coaches who were initially aprehensive about coping with the numbers coped easily and are confident they have the capacity for larger numbers.

In the background, Go_Ride Contact Corinne Pickard has been busy fielding enquiries and applications, sorting out Parental Consent forms, circulating Bike Check Lists and creating a register of Young Cyclists.

It was a cool windy evening, more like April than June, but Simon Frewin was on hand with his Coffe Kart to serve up hot chocolate with marshmallows for the participants and coffee for parent, coaches and helpers.
